A pileup of more than 100 vehicles shut down an interstate in Michigan amid dangerous whiteout conditions Jan. 19.
The pileup began before 10:20 a.m. on Interstate 196, about 24 miles southwest of Grand Rapids. The incident closed both directions of traffic between Hudsonville and Zeeland, a nearly 10-mile stretch, for several hours, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
No one was killed in the accident, but 10 people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the county told USA TODAY in an email. The pileup included two dozen semitrucks.
Michigan state officials described severe snowy weather and poor road conditions throughout the day.
Early Jan. 19, the National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids warned residents not to travel in the area because of whiteouts and increasing winds. Snow and ice had been forecast across the Great Lakes as part of an Arctic blast.
In a 6 p.m. update, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Capt. Jake Sparks said the roadway was open and authorities had cleared the scene. The cause of the pileup is under investigation, he said.
Freezing temperatures can cover roadways with ice and snow, increasing the likelihood of car accidents. Slick roads greatly diminish a vehicle’s stopping power, even if it has four-wheel drive.
If you can’t avoid driving in icy or snowy road conditions, here are some tips.
