DERBY — A 12-year-old was arrested in connection with stealing purses from cars at a grocery store, according to police. 
The Derby Police Department announced the arrest of the New Haven juvenile on Sunday evening. Police said the thefts occurred at the Big Y Plaza on New Haven Avenue.

Police said on Sept. 17 they were investigating several purse thefts, and the investigations showed the suspects arrived in stolen vehicles and were wearing face masks. 
The minor is accused of stealing purses from cars while customers were loading their groceries, according to police. 
Police clarified that these were not purse snatching and no violence occurred. 
“In most cases, the thefts occurred unbeknownst to the vehicle operators,” the department said.

Police charged the juvenile with larceny of a motor vehicle, conspiracy to commit larceny of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without a license, sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny.
