A new Tesla Roadster may be revealed this year, but its just getting started … still.
The long-awaited second-generation Roadster debuted as a prototype in 2017, but has been sitting on the back burner at Tesla ever since.
Elon Musk and Tesla’s head designer, Franz von Holzhausen, have both said that an unveiling of the production Roadster will happen in 2025, but that doesn’t meant it will be on sale anytime soon.
Von Holzhausen recently told the “Ride the Lightning” podcast that production will start “definitely within two years.”

Now a new job opening reported on by Teslarati is shedding more light on the model’s status.
The “Manufacturing Engineer, Roadster” position is the first that’s appeared with the model specified in the listing.
“Tesla is looking to hire a Manufacturing Engineer to contribute to the concept development and launch of battery manufacturing equipment for our cutting-edge Roadster vehicle,” the it says. “In this role you will take large scale manufacturing systems for new battery products and architectures from the early concept development stage through equipment launch, optimization and handover to local operations teams. Battery development is at the heart of our company, and this is an exciting opportunity to work directly on the central challenges for the all-new Roadster product architecture while still in its early development stages.”

It goes on to note that the position will be responsible to “validate and optimize processes from early prototype builds through full volume production,” and “ransition products from low-volume prototypes to large-scale production.”
This suggests that, as with many of Tesla’s new models, the Roadster will launch with a limited production pilot program before it is ramped up to higher volumes. Of course, with a starting price of $200,000, as of 2017, it’s not likely to be one of the brand’s best sellers.

Roughly 700 of the original Tesla Roadsters were built from 2008 through 2012, before Tesla shifted its focus to the Model S. Starting prices for the two-seat sports car ranged from around $100,000 to $130,000 during its run as a new model.
Musk has made some wild claims about the new Roadster’s capabilities, including an optional SpaceX thruster pack that will allow it to accelerate to 60 mph in less than one second and “fly” for short distances. “I think it has a shot at being the most mind-blowing product demo of all time,” Musk said.
As far as the engineer job is concerned, it is located at Tesla’s Fremont, Calif., factory, requires “3+ years of engineering or equivalent relevant experience” and has a salary range of $80,000 to $174,000.
