The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating who was at fault in a two-car crash in Hobe Sound that killed two teenagers and left a third with serious injuries on Jan. 2.
The crash occurred about 10 p.m. at Bridge Road and Interstate 95, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
A 17-year-old boy who attended Martin County High School and a 16-year-old Jupiter girl were pronounced dead at Jupiter Medical Center, where they were taken by ambulance, Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek told TCPalm Jan. 3.
A 13-year-old passenger was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital with serious injuries, sheriff’s officials said.
All three were traveling in a small sedan and exiting the interstate off the southbound ramp when they collided with another vehicle “T-bone style,” Budensiek said.
“We don’t know who is at fault right now,” he said.
The driver of that vehicle, a Hobe Sound resident, sustained minor injuries. Budensiek did not know their name, age nor gender.

An off-duty paramedic arrived at the scene and attempted to perform lifesaving measures on the teens until sheriff’s deputies and paramedics arrived and took over, Budensiek said.
Family members of all victims have been notified, but the Sheriff’s Office has not released the names.
“This is a tragic way to start the new year,” Budensiek said. “As a parent, this is horrifying beyond belief, and as impactful of an incident that can happen.”
Florida Highway Patrol will conduct road measurements and review the computers in the cars to determine their speeds and whether the teens were wearing their seatbelts, the sheriff said.
