NEW HAVEN, CT — Two people inside a stolen vehicle were killed when the car crashed into a tree early Sunday, state police said.
At 4:52 a.m., a 2019 Hyundai Elantra, was traveling northbound on Whalley Avenue (Route 63) approaching the intersection with Harrison Street.
The Elantra continued in a northwesterly direction where it departed the right side of the road and entered onto the roadside property of the Congregation Beth El Keser Israel Synagogue at 85 Harrison St., state police said.
The Elantra collided with a tree and ended up in the northbound lane of Whalley Avenue, state police said.
“Prior to the collision, New Haven Police Officers were attempting to initiate a traffic stop on the Hyundai Elantra after it was involved in an incident in which it nearly collided with a marked New Haven Police Department patrol vehicle,” state police said. “The Hyundai Elantra was later determined to be stolen.”
Both the driver and passenger of the Elantra were killed in the crash, state police said. IDs have not yet been released. State Police has assumed control of the investigation.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or the moments prior to the collision is asked to contact Det. James Bria at James.Bria@ct.gov or CARS Detective Alec DeRosa at Alec.DeRosa@ct.gov.
