State police are investigating an early morning crash Monday, Sept. 8, on Interstate 86 in Tioga County that killed two people.
Shortly after 4:30 a.m., the Tioga County 911 Center dispatched troopers to a crash involving a passenger vehicle and a tractor trailer on the highway in the Town of Nichols, according to New York State Police at Owego.
The investigation is still in its preliminary stages, but state police say both vehicles were eastbound on I-86 when the passenger car was rear-ended by the tractor trailer.
Two occupants of the passenger car were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators are not releasing the names of the victims at this time pending notification of next of kin.

The operator of the tractor trailer was not injured, and the investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing, troopers said.
