Police said a fatal crash is under investigation in New Haven. 
NEW HAVEN — Two people are dead after a stolen car fled police and struck a tree on Whalley Avenue on Sunday morning, state police say.
In a report, Connecticut State Police said a 2019 Hyundai Elantra was travelling north on Whalley Avenue, which is part of Route 63, just before the intersection with Harrison Street at 4:52 p.m. The vehicle left the right side of the road and entered the property of Beth El Keser Israel Synagogue on Harrison Street and struck a tree, police said. After the impact, the Hyundai came to a stop in the northbound lane of Whalley Avenue, police said.

Before the crash, New Haven officers were attempting to conduct a traffic stop on the stolen Hyundai after it nearly struck a police cruiser, police said. 
The driver of the Elantra, a male, and the front-right passenger, a female, died in the crash, state police said. Both were transported to the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for a post-mortem examination, police said, and their identities are being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next-of-kin.
At the request of city police and the New Haven State's Attorney's Office, the incident is being investigated by Connecticut State Police's Central District Major Crime Squad and its Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad, police said.

New Haven police reported the crash to the public just before 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
