The Ford Mustang Mach-E has taken the lead over the Tesla Model Y in a new comparison of electric SUV models.
Both cars have been refreshed for 2025, with Tesla improving its interior design and Ford making practical updates to the cabin.
They were evaluated on ride quality, comfort, performance, and cost.
The outcome points to a changing rivalry, and the details explain why Ford’s electric SUV came out on top.

In a comparison test, MotorTrend reported that the Mustang Mach-E offered a more comfortable ride for long journeys, thanks to softer, more supportive seats.
The Tesla Model Y provided more rear legroom and wider door openings, but the Ford Mustang EV gained ground with a new steering column-mounted gear selector that freed up space in the front.
Both electric SUV entries aimed to improve everyday usability, but the balance tipped toward Ford in this area.
Ride quality also showed differences.
The Tesla Model Y handled road imperfections better than its earlier versions, but the Mustang Mach-E was described as more pleasant over longer distances.
Both EVs depend heavily on touchscreen controls, yet there was a preference for Ford’s BlueCruise driver assistance for being steadier than Tesla’s FSD Supervised software.
In this category, the Mustang Mach-E’s technology came across as more consistent and reassuring.
Charging performance still leaned Tesla’s way. The Model Y offered a maximum 250 kW DC fast charge, compared to the Mustang Mach-E’s 150 kW limit.
In real-world use, however, both electric SUVs delivered nearly the same driving range, which made the speed difference less critical.
According to the review, the Mustang Mach-E’s slower charge rate did not outweigh its other advantages.
Meanwhile, straight-line speed went to Tesla.
The Tesla Model Y accelerated faster, but the Mustang Mach-E was called more enjoyable to drive, with balanced handling that made it engaging on the road.
Combined with a $3,640 lower price, the Ford Mustang EV presented a stronger value overall.
In the end, the Mustang Mach-E’s comfort and cost advantages were enough to claim victory in this particular comparison.
The Mustang Mach-E’s win against the Tesla Model Y highlights how Ford is strengthening its position in the electric SUV segment.
Tesla still leads with its charging network and continues to hold strong recognition in the EV space, but Ford’s updates show that established automakers are catching up quickly.
The rivalry between the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Tesla Model Y is now one of the defining matchups in the electric SUV market.
For many buyers, the choice between these two models is now less about brand dominance and more about comfort, value, and day-to-day usability.
The Mustang’s improvements directly address what many drivers want from an electric SUV, while Tesla must rely on its range and infrastructure strengths to stay ahead.
With more EV launches expected from both brands, the competition between the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Tesla Model Y is likely to remain strong.
