Three suspects are now in custody after an investigation into robberies of armored trucks in the Philadelphia region led to a pursuit into Lower Merion Township, Pennsylvania, police said Friday.
Lower Merion Police Superintendent Andy Block said his police department got a call around 11 a.m. from Philadelphia police and the FBI about the pursuit of three suspects wanted in connection with a string of armored truck robberies in the region.
Sources say law enforcement had the suspects under surveillance when those suspects realized they were being monitored. Sources say they took off with FBI agents in pursuit. Other departments and agencies joined in what eyewitnesses described as a high-speed chase that wound into Lower Merion Township.
The suspects turned down a dead-end street off Conshohocken State Road in Bala Cynwyd, according to police. Police said the suspects then got out of a white Honda Civic and fled on foot. Block said police found weapons inside the car.
Block said Philadelphia police arrested two suspects at 52nd and Parrish streets in the city around noon. Block said they found the two suspects in a Dodge Charger, which they believe is connected with the robberies.
The third suspect was later taken into custody off Conshohocken State Road in Lower Merion Township by police and the FBI.
Law enforcement has been on the hunt for the armored car robbers since the spring. Sources say in one of the alleged robberies, the suspects got away with close to $1 million.
Block said no one was injured during the pursuit.
The pursuit of the suspects led to a shelter-in-place order in the Bala Cynwyd area, and public and private schools in the Lower Merion School District were placed on lockdown, with parents told to stay away if they were coming to pick up their children.
The public schools in the district that were placed on lockdown are: Belmont Hills ES, Cynwyd ES, Merion ES, Penn Valley ES, Penn Wynne ES, Bala Cynwyd MS, Welsh Valley MS, and Lower Merion HS, the school district said on social media and in notices to parents. The school lockdowns have since been lifted.
Block said police will be at nearby schools at dismissal as a precaution.
The shelter-in-place order has since been lifted, officials said.
Images from Chopper 3 showed multiple roads blocked off with police vehicles. A police helicopter could also be seen flying around the township.
