A fiery three-vehicle crash on Santiago Canyon Road north of Silverado Canyon Road killed one adult, injured two others and a child and prompted a roughly seven-hour closure of part of Santiago Canyon Road on Thursday afternoon.
The head-on collision happened just after 1 p.m. on Sept. 4. The cause remains unknown, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Firefighters could be seen dousing burned vehicles with water, including a white sedan and a stake-bed truck, in footage from freelance news videographer OnScene.TV.
One adult was pronounced dead at the scene and two adults and a minor were transported to a hospital, according to CHP officer Fernando Perez.
Witnesses said a local gardener who was involved in the crash rushed to the car where the driver had died, and as the car began to burn, pulled a young child from the backseat and carried him to safety, Fox11 reported.
“What I observed was someone, appeared to be the driver, that very obviously had died,” witness John Thompson told the station. “That gentleman is a hero and saved that little child’s life.”
Part of Santiago Canyon Road remained closed in both directions until around 8:40 p.m., as investigators gathered evidence and crews worked to clear the scene.
This is a developing story. Additional information will be added when it becomes available.
