A resident of the South Okanagan who repeatedly rammed an Osoyoos police officer’s vehicle before escaping them has received a three-year jail sentence and five-year driving ban.
Tyler William Houle, who remained in custody following the completion of a previous 2025 jail sentence for being in a vehicle with a firearm present, was sentenced on Nov. 17 in Penticton Supreme Court for multiple charges.
According to court records, Houle received a three-year sentence for the charge of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, and 171 days for the charges of flight from police, failing to stop, driving while disqualified, dangerous operation of aconveyance and wilfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer, all stemming from the same May 12, 2024 incident.
On that day, according to a 2024 detention review judgement, Houle and another person had been asleep in a pick-up truck on the boat launch ramp in Osoyoos with the engine on and facing the lake. A citizen had called the police to check on the truck and it’s occupants.
The responding officer had approached and asked for a license and registration, with Houle providing a false name and claiming the vehicle, which matched the description of a stolen truck, belonged to his father.
After being asked to turn off the vehicle and hand over the keys, Houle had denied having the keys, but did turn the engine off.
While the officer returned to the police car to run some checks, they heard the engine of the truck turn back on. The officer then moved the police car closer to the back of the truck.
Houle put the truck in reverse and rammed the cruiser, then pulled the truck forward, before reversing and then repeating the process until the truck briefly got stuck in the mud. At this point the other occupant in the vehicle got out with their dog.
The officer got out and drew their firearm to order Houle out of the vehicle, moving in front of the police cruiser in the expectation that Houle would flee on foot.
Instead, Houle was able to get the truck unstuck and put it in reverse again, this time colliding with the police car with enough force to push it sideways and force the officer to run in order to avoid being hit.
Houle drove off, striking a parked trailer as he went while the other occupant of the vehicle stayed to provide Houle’s name to the officer.
Several days later, the vehicle and Houle were spotted in Penticton on two occasions, with the second leading to Houle’s arrest.
Houle has an extensive criminal record stretching back over two decades including over 60 convictions in B.C. and Alberta, with multiple firearm offences, dangerous driving convictions, flight from police, and multiple breaches of court orders.
His antics have previously made the news, particularly in 2017 when he either fell or jumped from a parkade in Abbotsford while being pursued by police, limping his way over to a vehicle and attemption to steal it before he was taken into custody.
He received a two-month jail sentence after time spent in custody was taken into account for that incident.
In March of 2025, he pleaded guilty to the charge of being in a vehicle knowing a firearm was present, after he was arrested in March of 2024 when police found him asleep in a car with a loaded rifle in plain view in the passenger seat next to him.
In 2019, Houle was arrested in Chilliwack after police pulled him over for driving while prohibited and found a rifle in car with him.
In addition to the most recent three-year jail sentence, Houle received further mandatory lifetime firearm bans and a five-year criminal driving prohibition.
