New figures from the Central Statistics Office show a 77% jump in the number of electric cars licensed for the first time in September of this year.
The CSO said the number of new electric cars licensed rose to 2,000 in September compared with 1,127 during the same month last year.
The licensing of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) also rose, increasing by 54% from 680 in September 2024 to 1,045 vehicles in September of this year.
Today’s CSO figures show that the total number of new private cars licensed in September rose by 10% to 6,723 from 6,110 the same time last year.
Meanwhile, the number of used (imported) cars licensed grew by 26% to 6,770 from 5,393 over the same time.
The combined share of petrol and diesel cars among new private cars licensed from January to September 2025 has fallen in comparison with 2024 – 43% compared to 55%, the CSO noted.
The CSO said that Volkswagen was the most popular make of new private car licensed in September, followed by Škoda, Toyota, Hyundai and Kia. Together, these five makes represented 48% of all new private cars licensed during the month.
The most popular brand of new electric car licensed in September was the Tesla Model 3, followed by the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Tesla Model Y.
