The race for electric cars is not slowing down and Musk wants to stay ahead
Tesla’s new Model YL, unveiled in August and first delivered this month, is already sold out in China for October deliveries. New orders show an estimated delivery date of November 2025 at the earliest, reflecting the strong uptake of the model in one of the company’s most important markets.
The long-wheelbase variant, with seating for six passengers, was announced to begin deliveries in September. Grace Tao, Tesla China’s vice president, confirmed on Weibo that the schedule would be met and, indeed, last week the first customers received their units. In less than two months, the crossover sold out all allocations for September and October.
According to industry estimates, Tesla received more than 35,000 orders for the Model YL on its first day of sales alone. Although some of the demand may have overlapped with the standard Model Y, analysts point out that the new version expands Tesla’s reach to buyers who require more space and capacity. This growth is key in the Chinese electric vehicle market, where local brands are advancing rapidly.
The pace of orders not only guarantees good quarterly results, but also reinforces Tesla’s presence in a competitive environment. The extended battle crossover could consolidate itself as one of the brand’s most successful products in China, especially by attracting families looking for a larger and more functional electric vehicle.
Beyond the Chinese market, the Model YL could also become an export option for countries where family vehicles are in high demand. With a starting price of RMB 339,000 ($47,180), the model combines space, performance and cost-effectiveness, making it a new growth lever in Tesla’s best-selling range.
