WESTPORT — The a stretch of the southbound side of the Merritt Parkway is closed in Westport and Fairfield early Monday after a pedestrian was struck by a motor vehicle, causing serious injuries, according to state officials.
Connecticut State Police said troopers out of Bridgeport were called around 4:15 a.m. to the southbound side of the parkway for a "reported car vs pedestrian collision."

The agency said serious injuries had been reported.
The state police crash reconstruction unit was called to assist at the scene, which was near exit 21 in Westport.
The state Department of Transportation's traffic monitoring site showed the southbound lanes of the Merritt Parkway were closed between exits 27 in Fairfield and 21 in Westport for a crash. 
Southbound traffic was stopped up to around exit 27, the DOT's traffic site showed.

State police said the duration of the closure is "unknown," and asked drivers in the area to seek alternate routes.
