Surrey police are investigating two car fires that happened Sunday in Surrey's Panorama Ridge neighbourhood.
The early-morning Sunday (Sept. 14) fires, which happened near 124 Street and 58 Avenue, are considered suspicious, senior media relations officer Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said Monday (Sept. 15).
Accelerant was poured on the vehicles and then they were set on fire, Houghton said, noting that while it's still early in the investigation, police are investigating whether the fires are linked to the ongoing extortion-related threats and shootings in the city.
A home in the same neighbourhood was the target of at least two such shootings earlier this year.
Also on Monday, Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke and SPS Chief Const. Norm Lipinski announced a $250,000 award to combat extortion-related crime, as well as a tip line dedicated to the issue.
