This week, Assemblyman Will Sampson touted the new Motor Vehicle Open Recall Notice and Fair Compensation Act he helped sponsor to better ensure drivers are properly notified of vehicle recalls.
Bill A4380, signed into law last week, directs the Motor Vehicle Commission to notify owners in writing if their vehicle has an open recall.
Before registrations are issued, that communication would alert vehicle owners about the details of the recall and make clear that repairs can be completed at no cost to them by an authorized dealer.
“This law is a welcome step forward for both consumers and workers alike,” said Sampson, chair of the Consumer Affairs Committee. “Drivers deserve to be notified right away when their car has a safety recall so they can get it fixed without delay.”
He also points out how the bill will reel in automakers responsible for not fairly compensating the dealerships, technicians and mechanics who fix their mistakes at the heart of recalls.
Supporters point to how manufacturers commonly reimbursed dealerships at rates below retail costs, forcing these local businesses to shoulder the burden.
Mechanics were also subjected to work under a quota system that often resulted in unpaid overtime.
