The new-generation X5 debuts five powertrains including hydrogen, refined design, and a smaller grille
A new chapter is opening for BMW’s long-running X5, and it comes with a powertrain option few rivals can match. Alongside the usual gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric choices, the next generation of BMW’s popular mid-size SUV will also be offered with hydrogen propulsion.
The new model, called the iX5 Hydrogen, will mark the company’s first series-produced fuel-cell vehicle, developed in partnership with Toyota and building on lessons from the current pilot fleet.

Our own spy photographers have snapped the new model during testing earlier this year, but BMW has stripped away some of the camouflage for the official photos, providing us with a clear look at the overall shape and profile of the new X5.
Compared to the current X5, which sports some of BMW’s largest kidney grilles, the next-gen model will adopt the Neue Klasse design language. As such, it’ll include a far smaller grille and headlights incorporated neatly into the fascia.
The side surfaces of the X5 also appear smoother than the current model. Found at the rear of this prototype are provisional taillights, but we expect the production model to include new LEDs, likely similar in design to those found on the all-new iX3.
BMW’s third-generation hydrogen system takes up 25 percent less space and is more power dense than previous iterations with the help of Toyota. The automaker has not yet shared detailed specifications, but promises increased output, improved range, and lower energy consumption. We also know that the iX5 Hydrogen won’t hit the market until 2028, so BMW still has a while yet to ensure it’s perfect.
Of course, the lineup won’t be limited to the FCEV option. The new X5 will also be sold in gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric forms. This will make it the first BMW model to offer five different powertrains options.

To support the introduction of the hydrogen version, BMW is involved in efforts to expand the hydrogen refueling network, starting with work in Germany and France.
Joachim Post, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, explained: “By launching the new BMW X5 with a choice of five drive system variants, we are once again demonstrating our leading position as a technology pioneer. Hydrogen has an essential part to play in global decarbonisation, which is why we are committed to driving the technology forward.”
