Authorities toughen sanctions and put repeat traffic offenders under the spotlight
Since late 2024, New York began implementing new traffic regulations to curb reckless driving, especially in school zones and dangerous crossings. One of the most significant measures is the S2812A/A5259A Law, which expands the number of intersections with red light cameras from 150 to 600. This automatic system captures drivers who run red lights, resulting in automatic fines and points on their license.
In addition, the penalty for passing a school bus with the stop sign deployed was increased: a third offense within three years now costs up to $1,500, according to Bill S9504A/A3120. These measures not only seek to curb the danger, but accumulating penalties can accelerate the automatic suspension of the license.
The so-called Angie’s Law, in effect since November 2024, allows serious charges to be brought against anyone driving with five or more active suspensions for traffic violations. The aim is to stop drivers with a dangerous history before they cause irreversible damage on the road.
On the other hand, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced that from January 2025 it will permanently revoke the license of those with four convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Even those with three prior convictions and no serious violations could see their renewal rejected for two years.
The Sammy’s Law, implemented by the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), is redefining speed in school zones, shared streets and residential neighborhoods. By 2025, 250 locations in the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island will have 20 mph limits, a measure aimed at reducing pedestrian fatalities and serious accidents.
According to Ydanis Rodriguez, commissioner of the NYC DOT, this change seeks to save lives and responds to alarming statistics on school crossing accidents. The new slow-speed zones will be monitored by cameras and non-compliance could accelerate the loss of points on the license.
