Footage released by police from the moments before a serious crash in downtown Auckland show a member of the public narrowly avoiding being hit.
Reporters at the scene on Thursday morning described a badly damaged vehicle, alongside a damaged police car on Victoria Street, between Queen Street and Hobson Street.
Police say they’ve established the car was travelling at speed along Victoria Street at 5.40am.

It then lost control and hit a police car that was at a set of traffic lights.
Police say the speeding car was not being pursued at the time.
The officer driving the patrol car received minor injuries, while another officer was unhurt.

The driver of the other car is in a serious condition in hospital.
The car was seen by an RNZ reporter up against a lamp-post with its airbags deployed.
St John says it treated three people at the scene, with one of them seriously hurt and the others moderately injured.
Part of Victoria Street was closed after the crash on Thursday.
