Assetto Corsa Evo continues to evolve during its Early Access phase with the latest Update 3 now live.
The update brings new content as well as feature to the currently in Early Access racing sim.
Content-wise, it’s killer. We now have a Ferrari F1 car, the Ferrari F1 car of the 2000s, the Ferrari F2004. This is the all-dominating V10 Ferrari where Michael Schumacher secures his 4th and most recent World Championship with a staggering 13 wins over a 18-race calendar. Rubens Barrichello also won 2 races in the same car in the 2004 season.
The cast of classic cars are not too shabby too. The famous Mercedes-Benz 190E AMG and the BMW M3 Sport Evo (E30) lets you create the heydays of DTM when these two cars competed in motorsports. The brand-new Audi RS 6 Avant is a family wagon that doubles as a track weapon with its twin-turbo V8 paired with a four-seater estate body. On the topic of track weapon and toys, the Caterham Seven Academy Racer is a low power, but also no electronic assists, raw car driving experience. And we also get to experience racecar maker Dallara’s road-going vehicle, the aptly-name the Dallara Stradale, which can be configured as three different variants: Barchetta (no doors or windows), Roadster (windows, doors but open top) and Coupe (closed top with gullwing doors and windows).
Fans of actual race cars can get their hands on the wheels of the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, the BMW M4 GT3 EVO and the Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2.
As for tracks, Assetto Corsa Evo gets two world-class circuits: Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and the Red Bull Ring in Austria.
As for features and gameplay improvements, the biggest new addition is multiplayer servers. AC Evo will offer public in-game servers with 24/7 access with no extra cost, an important thing to note among racing sims as some of them require a subscription or additional payment for access to these, despite these being the bare minimum you’d expect from a typical racing game with online multiplayer.
The free servers come from a collaboration between developers Kunos Simulazioni with SimGrid and their communities.
At the moment, free servers support up to 16 players per race, a low count, but this was made as Kunos continues to improve “session related functionalities and stability” with plans to increase the maximum player count per race in the future.
Kunos also has detailed pricing for Custom Server Portal. This is for communities looking to rent and configure their own dedicated servers required for activities like league racing. Pricing right now is in Euros only.
In addition, AC Evo Update 3 makes another pass for its tyre model (“tyres should respond more accurately to temperature, load, speed and camber changes”) and a new “proprietary suspension algorithm and an upgraded damping system running at 1000Hz” which should give more feedback to the driver what the car is doing, and provide a more dynamic (and hopefully more fun) driving experience.
Car engine ignition and startup sounds are now unique to every car and other audio changes to make the car sounds more authentic.
And finally, AC Evo Update 3 also made some improvements to the graphics engine including the addition of global illumination and optimisation on CPU and GPU use. The game should use less VRAM as well, a common problem modern games have where demand more VRAM on GPUs when GPUs in the market don’t have them in abundance.
Assetto Corsa Update 3 New Content
Assetto Corsa Evo’s Early Access launch hasn’t gone to plan, with the server woes and negative reception among fans. But with this being an Early Access release, there’s still time to get back on track and this update looks to steer the game in the right direction, at least on paper.
Assetto Corsa Evo is available in Early Access on PC (Steam).
