NEW HAVEN, CT — Two people were killed in separate crashes on Friday in New Haven, police announced on Saturday.
At 4:16 p.m., police responded to Middletown Avenue and Front Street on a report of a crash involving a Connecticut Transit bus and a sedan. Police found the driver of a VW Golf GLS, Jordan Betancourt-Escorza, 25, of New Haven, in the car suffering from injuries, police said.
Escorza was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital and later died as a result of his injuries.
“Video footage showed the CT Transit bus traveling north on Middletown Avenue and the VW Golf GLS traveling south on Middletown Avenue,” police said. “The VW Golf GLS crossed into the northbound travel lane and struck the CT Transit bus in a head on collision.”
Then, at 10:02 p.m., police responded to Ella T. Grasso Boulevard and Judson Avenue on a report of a crash involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers found the pedestrian, who has not yet been identified, in the right southbound travel lane on Ella T. Grasso Boulevard suffering from apparent injuries, police said.
The female pedestrian later died as a result of the injuries she sustained. The driver of the car remained at the scene.
“The operator’s statement on scene indicated he was traveling southbound on Ella T. Grasso Boulevard, when a female was suddenly in front of his vehicle,” police said. “It is unknown where the pedestrian entered the roadway. After striking the pedestrian, the operator stopped his vehicle to help render aid.”
