FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — It's been a mad dash to buy an electric vehicle (EV).
It comes after President Trump's Big Beautiful Bill eliminated the federal tax credit for people buying a new or used electric car.
Fresno Acura had trouble keeping the ZDX, its first all-electric vehicle ever made, in stock.
"We haven't had any EVs in our inventory for over a month. People have been coming in and asking for EVs specifically because they know the $7500 tax credit is about to expire," said Fresno Acura's Chief Compliance Officer, Ellena Sweet.
According to the IRS, if you purchase a new electric vehicle by September 30, you're still eligible for a $7,500 tax credit. And for other used purchases, you can receive an almost $4,000 reimbursement.
Sweet said this incentive didn't just make it difficult for the Fresno dealership to keep inventory.
"Once we ran out, you'd normally be able to contact another Acura dealer throughout the state and do what we call a dealer trade. And dealers just didn't want to let go of those EV's because they knew they would be able to sell them," she said.
But you still have ways to receive that federal tax reimbursement, even if you can't get into an EV by September 30th.
"If a customer were to come in and put a deposit on a vehicle, meaning a binding contract. They would still be able to obtain that vehicle after September 30 as long as they had a deposit binding contract," said Sweet.
Governor Newsom previously said he would try to support a California Tax Credit if the Trump administration cut the incentive.
Just days ago, several outlets reported Newsom said the state would continue to support Electric Vehicle infrastructure, but the state could not offer Californians a tax credit.
