Honda revealed a new Prelude GT500 race car based on the recently revealed Prelude sports coupe.
The new race car will compete in the 2026 Super GT season, where it is replacing the Civic Type R-GT.
According to Honda, the Prelude prototype will run its first test ahead of the season on Wednesday, October 1.
The Honda Prelude may have just been revealed earlier this month, but Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) has already revealed the first race car derivative in the form of the Prelude GT500. The new race car will compete in the 2026 Super GT season.
As with the rest of the GT500 field in Japan's Super GT series, the Prelude GT500 looks like a roided-out version of the road car it's based on. In the Super GT series, it'll race against the Toyota GR Supra GT500 and the Nissan Z Nismo GT500.
The Prelude GT arrives as a replacement for the underperforming Civic Type R-GT, which itself only arrived in 2024 as a replacement for the NSX-GT. While it's normal for Super GT manufacturers to run a car for extended periods, Honda reportedly felt the Civic was underperforming. According to a report from Motorsport.com, the Civic's four-door layout posed significant design limitations, prompting the switch to the Prelude, which Honda Racing thinks will allow it to achieve "higher goals."
Speaking to Motorsport.com, HRC's Super GT project leader, Masahiro Saeki, said, "We see potential to achieve a higher level than the Civic Type R-GT by applying the knowledge gained over these past two years to the development of a Prelude-based Super GT machine." The team will perform its first shakedown of the Prelude at Sportsland Sugo in Japan on Wednesday, October 1.
