The driver, an 18-year-old woman, was airlifted to hospital with significant injuries where she remains in intensive care.
The 23-year-old male driver of the ute was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries including a broken arm.
Inspector Craig McEvoy said the Nissan driver was a learner who was out on bail.
“Once her injuries are stabilised, and we get clearance from hospital, major collision investigators will interview her with the view of charging her with the appropriate offences caused as a result of this collision,” he said.
The car was allegedly stolen from an address in Wodonga West on Tuesday and police believe it was used in numerous crimes in the Wodonga area.
McEvoy said the car had been used by a number of other people but that police were investigating.
The crash was “completely avoidable”, he said.
“(It) could have been catastrophic,” McEvoy said.
“This does not have to happen, our members, our first responders, everybody who’s involved in the collision, the ripple effect this has on communities with the people in the vehicle, with witnesses to the collision, with family, friends, colleagues, (it) has such a significant impact to the community and we want to avoid that when we can.”
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
