Four Maltese people have died in a car accident in Croatia, after their rental car swerved off a coastal road and plunged down a ravine and into the sea.
Croatian media reported that the accident happened on Thursday afternoon on the D8 state road near Bunica, just south of the town of Senj on the country’s Adriatic coast.
Quoting the Lika-Senj Police Department, Croatian media said that a car with Zagreb licence plates, reportedly rented at Franjo Tuđman Airport in Zagreb, was travelling from Rijeka towards Senj when the driver lost control in a mild left bend.
Contacted by The Malta Independent, the Ministry for Foreign and Tourism Affairs in Malta said it is in contact with the Honorary Consul of Malta in Croatia, to continue following every update on this case, and to provide assistance as required, with the help of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of Croatia and other competent authorities in the same country. The Ministry also conveyed its condolences to the victims’ families.
Croatian media report that for reasons yet unknown, the vehicle veered to the right, struck two stone barriers, plunged around 70 metres down a ravine, and ended up in the sea.
The victims were reported as tourists, and were two couples: two men and two women.

Croatian media said that formal identification would follow once the investigation and autopsies are complete, but the Maltese government is said to be aware of the identities of the victims.
The bodies were recovered from the water by members of the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service from Gospić and transported to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Rijeka for autopsy and identification. A towing service was also on site to retrieve the car from the sea.
The head of the Gospić HGSS Station, Dario Cindrić, described the rescue operation to Croatian media: “Around 5 pm, the OKC of the Ministry of Internal Affairs informed us that a personal vehicle had landed in the Senj area and that one person had floated out. We gathered, four rescuers, two divers, and headed to Senj where the boat of the Lika-Senj Police Department was waiting for us. During the dive, we determined that there were three more people in the vehicle down there and then we began to pull them onto the police boat.”
Croatian media also said that there is a possibility that the driver suffered a medical episode while driving.
