WARWICK, NY — Police have identified the young victim of a deadly car crash on a Hudson Valley highway.
The Town of Warwick Police Department says that on Thursday, around 8:07 a.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of County Route 1 and Missionland Road, after receiving a report of a three-car motor vehicle accident. They were joined at the scene by Pine Island EMS and the Pine Island Fire Department.
First responders determined that the driver of a 2012 Suzuki sedan was trapped inside with serious injuries. After firefighters extricated the man, medical personnel provided emergency treatment at the scene.
The driver was taken to Pine Island Park, where a medevac helicopter airlifted him to Westchester Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Police say the driver, 19-year-old Zachary Matthews, of Sussex, New Jersey, died from his injuries on Friday.
The other vehicles involved in the collision were a 2020 Ford Explorer and a 2017 Chevrolet Express.
The driver of the Explorer, a 39-year-old woman from Pine Island, and her 22-year-old passenger, were taken to Garnet Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Express, a 32-year-old from Pine Bush, was taken to St. Anthony Community Hospital in Warwick with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation into the accident is being conducted by the Town of Warwick Police Department and the New York State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit.
