Tata Motors is gearing up to give its popular SUVs a major update. By March 2026, the Harrier, Safari, and the upcoming Sierra will get a new 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. This will give buyers more options as petrol vehicles become increasingly popular. Plus, petrol engines are easier to maintain, produce fewer emissions, and often cost less than diesel variants.
Here’s a closer look at the upcoming Tata SUVs with petrol engines:
Tata Harrier currently powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 168 bhp and 350 Nm of torque, will soon get the 1.5-litre tGDi turbo petrol engine. This engine delivers 168 bhp and 280 Nm of torque. Transmission options are expected to include a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT automatic. Tata’s in-house engine development means the petrol variant could be priced around Rs. 1 lakh lower than the diesel Harrier, making it more affordable for buyers.

The Safari, another flagship SUV, will also receive the 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. Currently, it shares the diesel engine with the Harrier. The petrol engine will offer benefits like lower emissions, reduced maintenance, and no DPF-related issues, making it a more convenient option for city and highway driving. Both manual and automatic transmission options are expected for the petrol Safari.
The upcoming Tata Sierra will join Tata’s petrol lineup, marking a significant update for the SUV. Spy images confirm that the Sierra will be offered with two all-new petrol engines – a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine for entry-level variants and a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine for higher trims. The turbo unit produces 170 hp and 280 Nm of torque, while both engines will be E20 fuel compliant.
Tata Motors is bringing petrol engines to its SUVs to offer more choices, lower prices for popular models like the Harrier and Safari, and keep up with the declining demand for diesel vehicles. Petrol engines are cheaper to maintain, produce less pollution, and avoid diesel-related problems like DPF issues.
The new 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine is E20 fuel-compliant and designed for better performance, reliability, and efficiency. Petrol versions are also expected to be more affordable than diesel models, making them ideal for city driving. This move will help Tata attract more buyers and strengthen its position in the premium SUV segment.
