HOUMA, La. (WAFB/Gray News) – An LSU football player was accused of causing a deadly vehicle crash last year, but newly released video of the crash shows he was 72 yards behind the vehicles that collided.
The new video, published by TV station KFOL, shows former LSU football standout Kyren Lacy behind the vehicles that crashed in December 2024, not weaving in front of them as was initially believed.
The new video paints a different picture than what investigators initially told the public about the wreck.
Lacy’s attorney, Matthew Ory, told KFOL there was no way Lacy could have been responsible for the crash that killed Herman Hall, 78.
Ory pointed to a portion in the crash report, attributing it to the District Attorney’s office, saying, “The evidence submitted in the crash report does not support that Kyren Lacy should have known that his actions were the cause of the crash that happened approximately 72 yards in front of him.”
Lacy was booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex on Jan. 12, 2025, on charges of hit-and-run driving with serious injury or death, reckless operation with accident and negligent homicide, records show.
He was released on a $151,000 bond.
Months later, in April 2025, Lacy died by an apparent suicide two days before a scheduled grand jury hearing related to the December 2024 crash.
ESPN reports that on the day of his death, the 24-year-old got into an argument with a family member and reportedly fired a gun before fleeing the scene.
He reportedly led police on a car chase before shooting himself in his car, police said.
Lacy’s lawyer was not immediately available for comment following the newly released video showing that he was not responsible for the December 2024 crash. He has maintained Lacy’s innocence from the very beginning.
On Friday, Louisiana State Police issued the following statement:
“Following the crash, LSP conducted a detailed investigation with the assistance of crash reconstruction experts and with all available information at the time.
Investigative findings revealed that Mr. Lacy’s reckless driving while approaching oncoming traffic led to the events of the crash.
The findings were presented to the 17th Judicial District Court, which approved an arrest warrant based on the evidence collected.
As with all investigations leading to arrest, the subjects of the investigation are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
