The DB12 S has 20 extra ponies under the hood as well as a host of changes to improve the driving experience
James Bond might be on hiatus, but he might want to check out the new Aston Martin DB12 S. It’s billed as the halo of the DB lineup and features an upgraded engine, an improved chassis, and a sportier design.
Starting under the hood, the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine has been tuned to produce 690 hp (515 kW / 700 PS) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. That’s an increase of 20 hp (15 kW / 20 PS), which helps to lower the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) time to 3.4 seconds. However, the top speed remains unchanged at 202 mph (325 km/h).

Part of the improved performance is due to an optimized Launch Control system. It reduces gearshift times by more than 50% compared to the regular model. Furthermore, engineers fine-tuned the throttle calibration by “introducing a more progressive throttle pedal feel with a new S-specific drive-by-wire throttle map to give the driver an even greater sense of connection and control.”
That’s just scratching the surface as the car has a revised suspension with a stiffer rear anti-roll bar as well as “finessed camber, toe and castor geometry settings.” They’re joined by new software for the Bilstein DTX dampers, which helps to improve roll and pitch control.
The team didn’t stop there as they also revised the steering and electronic rear differential. These changes promise to deliver better “connection and response for [an] even more natural and intuitive feel.”
An Angry New Look
Styling changes are subtle, but the DB12 S is distinguished by a dual element front splitter that helps to visually lower and widen the car, while also providing additional downforce. They’re joined by a ventilated hood, which features louvres in gloss black or twill carbon fiber.
The lowered appearance continues further back as the model sports gloss black side skirts. Customers will also find 21-inch wheels, which are backed up by a carbon ceramic braking system that has discs measuring 16.1 inches (410 mm) front and 14.2 inches (360 mm) rear. They save 60 lbs (27 kg) of unsprung weight compared to steel brakes, while also providing better performance and thermal capacity.
The rear end is notable for having a new spoiler and a more aggressive bumper. The latter accommodates a stacked stainless steel four-tailpipe exhaust system. Buyers can also get a louder titanium exhaust, which saves an additional 25.8 lbs (11.7 kg) of weight.
An Upgraded Cabin
The styling changes extend to the interior, which is adorned with a red anodized rotary controller. It’s joined by 16-way power sport seats as well as Alcantara and leather upholstery. Buyers will also find gloss black and dark satin chrome trim.
An assortment of options will be available including carbon fiber performance seats and a heated Alcantara sports steering wheel. Customers can also get a Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system, a garage door opener, and aluminum or wood trim.
The DB12 S will be offered in coupe and convertible configurations, and Aston Martin is currently accepting orders. Deliveries are scheduled to begin early next year.
