Police first spotted a speeding vehicle on South Kiama Drive, and when they tried to pull the car over, it allegedly sped off.
A chase then started about 10am on Thursday, October 9, and continued north before being terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.
“Police continued to monitor the vehicle until it stopped at Shellharbour Junction, where the driver and passenger ran from the vehicle,” a NSW Police spokeswoman said.
Trains on the South Coast Line were halted multiple times as police searched for the people in the car.

The first stoppage was about 11am for 10 minutes after reports of a person in the rail corridor. Trains then resumed under orders to go slowly.

Then, at midday, police were near the rail tracks, and trains were stopped for about seven minutes
A woman who witnessed the police chase said the vehicle the officers were chasing reached a speed of more than 100kmh.
“Police chase. Almost got wiped out on South Kiama Drive, 10am, stolen Black Mercedes SUV coupe,” Chrissy Mc posted to Kiama Community Page on Facebook.
“Looked like different number plates, possibly Tasmanian. Not completely sure.
“If you see it, possibly let police know. He almost had a number of head-ons. Speeds in excess of 100kph.”

Another person, Fiona Smith, wrote that she also saw a speeding Mercedes.
“Looks like heading south on highway again,” she wrote.
“Passed us at speed, near top shops. Hope everyone in town OK.”
While police have not confirmed what type of car the alleged offender was driving, a spokeswoman said the dog unit helped find the driver.
“Officers, with the assistance of the dog unit, commenced a search of the surrounding area,” she said.
About 11.50am, a 24-year-old man was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.
“The vehicle, which is believed to have been stolen from a holiday park on Bourrool Street, Kiama, on Friday, October 3, 2025, has been seized for forensic examination,” the spokeswoman said.
Inquiries are ongoing.
