A young man died in a tragic collision in North Cork late last night. The man, who was in his late teens, was fatally injured when the car he was driving left the road and crashed into a ditch.
The tragic collision occurred in Newmarket, a small town north of Kanturk, shortly after 11.20 pm on Saturday. Gardaí and emergency services rushed to the scene of the accident at Scarteen Lower.
The man who died was the driver of the vehicle. A passenger, another teenage boy, was uninjured in the accident. The body of the driver has been removed to the mortuary in Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
The road is currently closed, and local diversions are in place to allow Garda Forensic Collision Investigators (FCI) to carry out a full forensic collision investigation of the scene.
Gardaí at Mallow Garda Station are appealing to anyone who was travelling in the area at the time of the collision to contact them. Road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) from that section of road during the relevant period are also asked to make it available to investigating officers.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Mallow Garda Station on 022 31 450, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
