(WJAR) — A family has been displaced after a fire engulfed a family car, sending flames tearing through their single-family home in Burrillville on Sunday.
The fire occurred on Steere Street just off East Avenue in the Harrisville neighborhood.
Fire crews were called just after 2 p.m. for reports of a car engulfed in flames.
The fire spread quickly to the home, officials said.
Three people were inside, including an individual with special needs.
All three people got out safely.
However, the firefighting effort continued Sunday afternoon, with trapped flames and recurring hotspots continuing to pose a challenge.
"The problem we're having here is the single-family residence with many additions and a lot of opposing roof lines, and you have a lot of fire trapped throughout the roof structure," Harrisville Fire Department Chief Marcel Fontenault said. "We're having a hard time accessing the house because of trees and bushes around the house."
Fire crews are expected to remain at the scene through the early evening.
Authorities did not immediately say what caused the fire.
The house is being considered a total loss.
