It's been a sad three years since Subaru officially discontinued the WRX STI, but our long international nightmare could be over soon enough. That's because Subaru has just announced it will debut not one but two new STI concepts at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show on October 29.
This monumental announcement comes with few details, but Subaru gave us enough to salivate about the potential of these new models. The first is known as the Subaru Performance-E STI Concept, and is, predictably, based on the electrified performance platform that the automaker has been teasing since it discontinued the internal combustion WRX STI. Subaru dubs it "the future of the performance scene,"and says it will include a "comfortable, spacious interior" as well as be fun to drive.
Beyond this flowery marketing language, the details of this electric STI remain completely under wraps. We've previously reported on Subaru's desire to bring performance power back to the brand, with Subaru's European head citing the balance between meeting emissions regulations and electrification; assuming this concept isn't just a flight of fancy, it seems an electric STI may really happen.
But the potential for an STI EV doesn't slam the door shut on internal combustion for Subaru's performance wing. The Subaru Performance-B STI concept will join the Performance-E STI Concept—and this second vehicle is confirmed to use ICE power. Specifically, Subaru says a horizontally-opposed engine (leading us to believe the "-B" stands for "boxer") and the brand's symmetrical all-wheel drive will be key facets of the new concept. The image released with the annoucement appears to have the Impreza's headlights, suggesting it, like classic WRX STI models, may be based on that compact car's platform.
Subaru also teased both vehicles with an image of their shadowy silhouettes, revealing what appear to be hatchback bodies. (It's not entirely surprising that Subaru would want to throw its hat back in the AWD hot hatch market, as Toyota's GR Corolla is currently walking away with the entire segment.)
We'll have to wait and see what comes of these two STI concepts, but Subaru has certainly grabbed our attention. No matter he propulsion style or performance figures, we're happy to see one of the most pedigreed names in performance cars return—even if it is in concept form for now.
