Lance Stroll wiped out Esteban Ocon in Austin to end the Sprint under the safety car.
Lance Stroll has been handed a huge grid penalty for the United States Grand Prix – after his Sprint collision with Esteban Ocon.
In the closing laps of the shorter race at Austin, Stroll tried a legitimate move on Ocon’s Haas for 12th place at Turn 1, but badly misjudged the move, and thumped into the rear of Ocon’s car.
Both were eliminated on the spot, with the race ending under the safety car.
Stroll was summoned to the stewards for the incident – and was promptly a five-place grid drop for the grand prix – and two penalty points on his superlicence.
That takes Stroll to seven for the 12-month period.
In their verdict, the stewards found that: “Car 18 attempted an inside overtake on Car 31 into Turn 1 but misjudged the braking point and collided with Car 31.
“The Stewards determine that the driver of Car 18 is wholly at fault and apply a penalty accordingly. As the driver to be penalised did not finish the race, a grid penalty equalling a 10-second time penalty is imposed.”
The Canadian also offered an apology to the Frenchman for the incident.
