Here are the highlights: Indonesian Automotive Industry Cautious Amid Sluggish Car Market; Indonesia Falls to 122nd in Latest FIFA Rankings; and One Year of Prabowo-Gibran: Rising Attacks, Threats on Journalists and Shrinking Press Freedom.

The following is the list of the top 3 news on Tempo English today:
The automotive industry is cautious in setting prices and target markets amid the sluggish economy due to weakening purchasing power and global economic instability.
“The market conditions remain sluggish, purchasing power is declining, so we need to pay more attention to consumer behavior, and why they postpone their purchases. That ought to be explored,” said the Head of Dealer Network Development at Jaecoo Indonesia, Setia Hariadi, in Yogyakarta on Friday, October 17, 2025.
The Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association recorded that direct-to-consumer sales from January to June 2025 only amounted to 390,467 units, dropping 9.7 percent compared to the same period in 2024. Meanwhile, wholesale sales, or sales from distributors to dealers, are down 8.6 percent to 374,740 units, compared to the previous 410,020 units.

The Indonesian national team has dropped three ranks in the latest FIFA list released on Friday, October 17, 2025. The Garuda squad now occupies the 122nd position in the world, down from the 119th rank, which was one of the best achievements in recent years.
This decline happened after poor results in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. During that time, Indonesia suffered two defeats, 2-3 against Saudi Arabia and 0-1 against Iraq. These two negative results had a significant impact on Indonesia’s FIFA points.
Despite showing high spirits, Joey Pelupessy and his teammates failed to match the experience and quality of opponents who were far above their ranking. The defeats not only thwarted Indonesia’s journey to the final round and the fifth round, but also caused the national team’s position to drop in the world ranking.

The administration of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and his deputy, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, will mark its first year on Monday, October 20. Various notes, evaluations, and campaign commitments are being questioned, including the assurance of press freedom.
Referring to the Asta Cita, efforts to strengthen the ideology of Pancasila, democracy, and human rights as well as to guarantee press freedom are part of the Prabowo-Gibran work program in an effort to strengthen democracy.
“However, what happened instead was that Prabowo-Gibran exhibited a government that is far from press freedom,” said Bayu Wardhana, the General Secretary of the Independent Journalists Alliance (AJI) Indonesia, when contacted on Saturday, October 18, 2025.
