TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto announced that Indonesia will have its own national car within the next three years. He made the statement during a plenary cabinet meeting at the State Palace in Jakarta on October 20, 2025, marking one year of his administration.
“I have allocated the funds, and the land for the factories is ready. The team is now working, and we’ve already produced jeeps made in Indonesia,” Prabowo said.
He noted that government officials and military officers would take pride in using domestically produced vehicles. The President highlighted that the Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) already uses an Indonesian-made jeep when leading troops.
“Your president also uses Indonesian-made jeeps. The other day, I wanted to go incognito, so I didn’t use it. I used my regular car, an Alphard. It’s been a while since I enjoyed riding in an Alphard,” he joked.
Prabowo added that he intends to set an example by consistently using the Maung, a locally manufactured vehicle made by state-owned defense company PT Pindad.
“I don’t care. The good cars can be used during holidays. When I’m not calling you, you can use those cars,” he told his ministers.
When inaugurated on October 20 last year, Prabowo rode from the Parliament complex to the Presidential Palace in a white Pindad MV-3 Garuda Limousine.
He previously expressed his wish to use the Maung as his official vehicle and called for other high-ranking officials, including ministers, deputy ministers, governors, and mayors, to do the same.
“I’ve planned for all ministers, deputy ministers, directors general, and regional leaders to use vehicles made in Indonesia,” Prabowo said in a written statement dated October 28, 2024.
The President described the use of Maung as a gesture of national pride and appreciation for domestic innovation. “I just like it. I like the bright color,” said the Gerindra Party chairman when asked why he preferred the white model.
