A nationally touring Sprint Car ride and high-profile driver are looking forward to new beginnings with one another.
Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall Racing announced Monday that its hired five-time World of Outlaws winner Spencer Bayston to fill the seat of the No. 17 NOS Energy Drink machine full-time in 2026 that Sheldon Haudenschild will relinquish following Nov. 5-8’s World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte. Former Shark Racing crew chief Kyle Pruitt will serve as the team’s head wrench.
“The pairing of recently announced crew chief, Kyle Pruitt, and veteran driver, Spencer Bayston, only made sense for SJMR and longtime partner, NOS Energy Drink,” the SJMR team said in its announcement on social media. “Both Pruitt and Bayston are proven winners within the sport and eager for more. SJMR will field a second car at the upcoming World Finals in Charlotte, NC for Bayston.”
For the SJM team co-owned by NASCAR Cup driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Richard Marshall, it’s the first time they’ve had to search the free agent market since they hired Wooster, Ohio’s Haudenschild in 2018 — a pairing that’s lasted seven seasons on the World of Outlaws circuit. All of Haudenschild’s 45 victories on the WoO tour have come with the SJM team.
Bayston now becomes the second-ever driver of the SJM No. 17 and fifth-ever driver under Stenhouse’s ownership. Stenhouse had Joey Saldana, Kyle Larson and Jac Haudenschild drive his Sprint Car during the 2017 season when the NASCAR driver co-owned his team with Matt Wood before Marshall entered into co-ownership prior to 2018.
It’s an opportunity for Bayston to rejoin a national tour — the World of Outlaws where the SJM team has campaigned the last seven years — after dropping off the Kubota High Limit Racing circuit following his release from Jason Meyers Racing this past August.
Bayston has often shown flashes of great potential over the years with a resume bolstered by five nationally touring victories and a USAC National Midget title in 2017.
Though Bayston hasn’t won a winged 410 Sprint Car race since August 2023’s Night Before The Iron Man at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55, he’s been a front-runner in nationally touring events the last two months in select races aboard the Paul Silva-managed No. W owned by Kevin Kozlowski and the Tarlton Racing No. 21. He also finished runner-up at the Trophy Cup 31 at Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway on Saturday to Tanner Holmes.
Since his departure from Jason Meyers Racing, Bayston’s finished second in High Limit (Aug. 15) and WoO (Sept. 20) action at Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway — with the most recent being a photo finish decided by 0.021 seconds where David Gravel edged him out for the $83,000 victory in the Dennis Roth Classic.
Over the last nine 410 races for Kozlowski and the Tarlton teams, Bayston has five top-fives and and seven top-10 finishes.
