Fayetteville police say that two sisters were racing when one crashed, causing the deaths of three young men in her car. Trevor Merritt, Jai’Hyon Elliott and Nick Williams died Oct. 8. 
Dymond Nekiya Monroe, 21, was driving the trio from football practice at E.E. Smith High School to a birthday celebration for a friend when her 2024 Honda Civic crashed into a telephone pole on Rosehill Road, continued down a sidewalk and collided with a tree.

On Tuesday, police filed charges against Monroe, who is still in the hospital recovering from her injuries, and another driver. Officers say both women were speeding, driving recklessly and without valid insurance and were racing at the time of the crash. Monroe was also charged with three counts of involuntary manslaughter.
In investigating the fatal crash, police found that the 2023 Dodge Charger driven by Destini Rhinada Genwright was on the same road at the same time. Fayetteville police are expecting her to turn herself in to face her charges.
According to the Fayetteville Police Department, the two women are sisters.
Monroe’s criminal record shows another speeding charge — going 51 in a 35 mph school zone — on Aug. 7 on the same road.
