A woman was hit by a car in Durham sparking a major emergency response in the early hours of Sunday. The crash happened at around 1.30am on Sunday, in the Neville's Cross area.
The pedestrian suffered injuries to her head and chest, and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle, the North East Ambulance Service confirmed.
A video shared online shows a large emergency service presence was at the scene, with several police and ambulance vehicles blocking the crossroads, as the road remained closed for several hours. Radar tracking shows a police helicopter circling over the area for about half an hour at 2am.
A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 1.54am this morning for a pedestrian who had been involved in a collision with a car at the junction of Newcastle Road and Darlington Road in Neville's Cross, Durham.
"We dispatched two paramedic ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a doctor and a duty officer to the scene. They treated one patient with injuries to her head and chest before taking her to the RVI in Newcastle."
Her condition and the seriousness of her injuries are not currently known.
Durham Police confirmed the main intersection of the road reopened at around 7am. The force’s roads policing unit previously urged members of the public to refrain from speculation, stating: "Out of respect for those involved, and all who attended the collision at Neville’s Cross this morning, we request that speculation regarding this incident is kept to a minimum."
