ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Three people face charges after what Greece Police are calling a multi-agency chase of a stolen car, possibly involved in “multiple larcenies and other crimes” across the county.
Joseph Clark, 47, Juanita Monahan, 56, and Tania Sims, 33, are all charged with criminal possession of stolen property and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Police say more charges are expected.
Greece Police say they spotted the stolen Jeep Compass on West Ridge Road just after 7 p.m. with the help of a license plate reader. As News10NBC has covered, these readers hang by power poles or traffic lights and scan for license plates of cars reported stolen or with arrest warrants attached to them.
Officers say the Jeep’s driver refused to pull over, leading to a chase that went into the City of Rochester. The Rochester Police Department and New York State Police also joined the chase, using spike strips to deflate the car’s tires on Dewey Avenue. News10NBC saw officers surrounding the car near Alameda Street, not far from the Aquinas Institute.
According to police, the suspects refused to get out of the car, forcing officers to shatter the driver’s window. That’s when all three were arrested. None of them were injured.
Clark is also charged with multiple traffic violations and obstructing governmental administration. Police say the stolen car had “previously fled from law enforcement.” The investigation into the other crimes is ongoing.
Greece Police has told News10NBC that, because of the license plate readers, car thefts have gone down and arrests have gone up.
