RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Fall isn’t just about crisp air and colorful leaves — it’s also the most dangerous time of year to be on the road.
According to Carfax, falls account for the highest percentage of car accidents in most states, including Virginia.
Carfax spokesperson Em Nguyen said there are several reasons for that.
“Weather transitions, daylight saving, deer, and busier roadways. All of these factors combine to make fall one of the most dangerous times to drive,” Nguyen said.
As temperatures drop, roads can quickly become slick from rain, frost or falling leaves.
“Those rapid weather changes can catch people off guard, especially during early mornings or evening commutes,” Nguyen said.
The end of daylight saving time also means more people are driving in the dark.
“With less daylight, visibility drops and reaction times can slow down. It really changes how we see and respond on the road,” Nguyen said.
Another big concern this time of year: deer. Fall marks the peak of deer mating season, and collisions spike as animals move across roadways at dawn and dusk.
On top of that, back-to-school season and fall activities bring heavier traffic.
“The increased activity on the roads themselves, especially with people heading back to school and fall events, just means more drivers, more distractions, and more potential for crashes,” Nguyen said.
Carfax recommends drivers slow down, stay alert for wildlife, and make sure headlights and tires are in good shape as the seasons change.
“We can’t control the weather or the time change,” Nguyen said, “but we can control how we prepare for it and how we drive.”
