Images from the scene show a car engulfed in fire on the hard shoulder near Newhouse
The M8 was closed after a car burst into flames in North Lanarkshire.
Drivers are being asked to avoid the area between junctions five and six near Newhouse after the fire was reported around 10.30am on Thursday.
Emergency services were sent to the scene after images showed a car engulfed in flames on the hard shoulder.
Traffic was restricted due to smoke after two appliances were sent to the scene.
A Police Scotland statement read: “The M8 has reopened eastbound near Newhouse, following a vehicle fire which was reported around 10.30am on Thursday, October 30 2025.
“No injuries were reported. Road users are thanked for their patience.”
One lane reopened after 11.30am, but with drivers reporting long delays.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 10.27am on Thursday, October 30, to reports of a car on fire on the M8 eastbound near Shotts.
“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances to the area, and the fire was extinguished.
“There were no casualties, and firefighters left the scene after ensuring the vehicle and area was safe.”
