State Highway 3 near Hamilton Airport is closed after a serious head-on crash.
Stuff reports one person has died.
Police were called to the two-vehicle crash near the Narrows Rd intersection about 1.20pm.
“Initial indicators suggest that there have been critical injuries,” police said.
“The Serious Crash Unit has been notified.
“Motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible, and expect delays.”
Hato Hone St John said two patients – one critical and one in a serious condition – were taken to Waikato Hospital.
A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson said they were called out at 1.17pm and sent two fire trucks from Hamilton and Chartwell.
“It was a head-on [collision]. One person was trapped and we used cutting gear to extricate the person. We then assisted police and ambulance.”
NZ Transport Agency said SH3 was closed and detours were in place.
Health NZ says 13 measles cases have now been confirmed nationwide.
