Security cameras provided Melbourne police with footage that led to the location and seizure of a vehicle investigators believe was involved in a hit-and-run crash which killed a 70-year-old bicyclist.
The deadly crash happened about 5:30 a.m. Oct. 29 near the intersection of Eau Gallie Boulevard and Highland Avenue, claiming the life of James Griffin of Melbourne.
In an Oct. 31 statement, Melbourne Police Department announced that the “breakthrough came after extensive review of security footage generously provided by local business owners and residents.”
Witnesses had told investigators that a light-colored vehicle was seen traveling erratically moments before the collision. The vehicle then struck the bicyclist before continuing west on Eau Gallie, police said.
The vehicle was tracked to a property on St. Clair Street, where a search warrant was served. It “exhibits visible damage consistent with a collision and will undergo forensic processing to confirm its connection to the incident and to identify the driver,” police said.
“Investigators extend their sincere gratitude to the community members who assisted in this case,” police said. “Their cooperation was instrumental in advancing the investigation. We continue to encourage anyone with additional information to come forward.”
