Chinese electric car maker BYD is renting hectares of makeshift storage space including at a theme park south of Sydney after importing thousands more cars than it sells, allowing it to stockpile lucrative carbon credits under the Albanese government’s new vehicle efficiency standards.
The EV giant imported nearly 51,000 cars in the year to September, data from the Register of Approved Vehicles show, but it sold just shy of 38,000. Rivals such as Toyota, Ford, Tesla and MG kept much tighter inventories, with import and sales figures matching each other much more closely.
