Two people were found dead Wednesday afternoon after a vehicle was pulled from the river near River Road on Johns Island, according to local authorities.
Emergency crews from the St. John’s Fire District, Charleston County EMS and the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office responded around 2:30 p.m. to reports of a submerged vehicle near 779 River Road.
When first responders arrived, they found the vehicle upside down and underwater near the River Road overpass. Witnesses told authorities the vehicle had left the roadway and entered the water.

Rescue crews entered the river in an attempt to reach anyone trapped inside, but access to the vehicle was difficult and unsuccessful. The car was eventually turned over and pulled to shore, where responders discovered two people dead inside, officials said.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and the Charleston County Coroner’s Office are investigating.
Agencies assisting at the scene included the Charleston Fire Department, St. Andrews Fire Department, North Charleston Fire Department, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the Charleston County Rescue Squad.
