A substitute teacher with a history of DUIs was seen arriving at a Wisconsin elementary school so drunk he fell out of his car — with video showing him then drunkenly staggering around the campus for hours, according to cops.
Christopher Rias, 30, was already banned from boozing while on bail for his third DUI arrest when he was seen driving drunk to Bay Lane Elementary School in Muskego last Thursday, cops said
Security cameras caught him staggering out of his car around 8:20 a.m. — then falling to his knees as he failed to walk away.
Once inside the school, he was seen clearly struggling to walk in a straight line, swaying with every step while also interacting with students — with blood tests showing his blood alcohol level was still more than four times the legal driving limit hours after he arrived to teach.
Police body cam footage obtained by WISN shows the drunk teacher being placed in handcuffs in the school parking lot around lunchtime after school officials contacted the Muskego Police Department.
“What did I do?” he asked the arresting officers.
“You showed up to work drunk,” a cop bluntly responded.
Rias had slurred speech, bloodshot red eyes and reeked of alcohol, according to the criminal complaint.
A preliminary breath test read .36 — more than four times the legal driving limit of .08.
Rias already had an active warrant out for his third driving under the influence offense — and was out on bail on conditions that barred him from drinking alcohol.
He was taken into custody for his fourth DUI, violating bail and the active warrant. He is currently being held at the Muskego County Jail.
The Bay Lane Elementary School principal said students were never in danger and that Rias had been hired by the district through a third-party contractor, Kelly Education.
“We recognize the seriousness of this situation and are taking definitive action to ensure a safe and professional learning environment for every student,” Robin Schrot said in a statement.
“We have been in direct contact with Kelly Education to thoroughly review this incident, ensure appropriate policies are enforced, and demand a full accounting of their screening and oversight processes.”
