A woman has been found dead in a car that was submerged in an Upstate New York pond, according to New York State Police.
Police said they were dispatched by the Otsego County 911 Center to a report of a vehicle in water near the intersection of U.S. Route 20 and Skinner Road in the town of Richfield Springs. A passerby called 911 after observing what appeared to be part of a submerged vehicle around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
A 39-year-old female was found dead inside the vehicle upon arrival, troopers said. Her name was not immediately released, but police said she was identified as a Richfield Springs resident.
Police said a preliminary investigation determined she was driving a Mitsubishi Mirage when she failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection. She continued off the road, crashing into the pond sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
Additional details have not been released. The investigation is ongoing.
State Police said they were assisted by members of the Underwater Recovery Team, as well as Richfield Fire/EMS and the Otsego County Coroner.
Richfield Springs is located in Otsego County, halfway between Herkimer and Cooperstown, about 60 miles east of Syracuse.
