GM is in the midst of a product strategy shift, broadening its vehicle lineup with a mix of both all-electric and internal combustion-based vehicles, as well plans to reintroduce hybrid options to the North American market. In addition, GM now looks like it will revise its U.S. product strategy with a renewed focus on passenger cars, signaling that the automaker isn’t ready to fully abandon the more traditional body styles quite yet.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the company is now working on “multiple variants” of a new passenger car, all of which will be based on the Alpha 2-2 platform.
Cadillac Expressive Coupe concept
For those readers who may be unaware, the Alpha 2-2 platform is essentially an evolution of the rear-wheel-drive Alpha 2 architecture that underpins the sixth-generation Chevy Camaro, as well as the Cadillac CT4 and CT5. As GM Authority was the first to report, the Alpha 2-2 platform will serve as the architecture for the next-generation Cadillac CT5, but sources also tells us that The General has at least one additional Alpha 2-2-based passenger car planned for the U.S. market.
Although the identity of the second Alpha 2-2-based passenger car vehicle remains under wraps, there are several possibilities to consider. Among these is a new Chevy sedan, the next-generation Camaro coupe and convertible, or even a new CT5 convertible or coupe, the latter of which was hinted at with Cadillac’s Expressive Coupe concept.

Each would share key components to improve economies of scale and maintain a steady production schedule at the GM Lansing Grand River Assembly plant – an important detail, given the facility can’t rely solely on CT5 production to remain viable. The Alpha 2-2 platform would also provide the flexibility needed for both performance and luxury applications, and could revive nameplates like the Malibu for a more family-oriented offering, or possibly even the Impala for something more performance-focused. Another intriguing possibility is a four-door Camaro, which would align with Ford’s potential plan to introduce a new four-door Mustang variant.
Either way, we’ll keep our ear to the ground and report back what we hear, so keep it locked to GM Authority for more.

Build these, especially the camaro and make the the 1982-93 version which makes the trans-am kitt is back
Build a next generation Chevy Commodore/G8 on the platform. I say G8 and not SS 1) because it looked better 2) more affordable Charger rival
The SS’s biggest problem was that it looked boring.
And it was 10k more than a v8 Camaro
Lowercase gm, always years behind the customer.
Hopefully Buick is apart of this plan too. How about a New Buick Regal and Regal GS and bringing back the LaCrosse or Park Avenue to the US Market. A Riviera 2+2 Coupe and Convertible and Reatta 2 Seat Roadster off the current C8 platform including a New Cadillac Allante or XLR would be Great for Buick and Cadillac too. Hopefully we’ll also see a New Grand National and GNX off this platform. Cadillac and Buick and Lincoln desperately need Sedans, Coupes and Convertibles again for the US Market. A Cadillac and Buick Wagon would be Great to see as well.
I don’t think they will bring back any Buick sedans sadly. They seem to be content to let Buick be GMC with no Trucks and Squishier Styling. Which is a real shame, I current own a 2018 Buick Regal TourX and love it. I would love to buy a new one in a few years when mine ages out, and if they released one with a manual from the CT5 V Blackwing and the V6 from the baby V and called it a GNX Wagon I would trade in my TourX for it right now. (Assuming it’s priced like a CT5-V and not a Blackwing)
I also have a 2018 Buick TourX wagon………I love everything about it. I agree 100% and would buy another, especially a GNX version in a heartbeat. Best daily driver that I have ever had. Too bad they never spent any money advertising and promoting them, when people see it now they think it is an Audi or other German variant.
By the way I was next to an imported Holden Ute the other day, too bad that they never brought those to the US when they had the Pontiac G8…..there were a couple prototypes but no production….
I also wondered by they didn’t bring over the Holden Ute. My guess is that it would not be a high-profit offering and its sales would cut into the higher profits of the Silverado. In those days, GM was hoarding every nickel and taking few chances with low-volume product. The SS and GTO were selling too slow as it was.
CT5/V: 4 door and coupe (luxury and performance) 2.0T, 3.6T, LT4.
Buick Regal: 2.0T (grandmas grocery getter) 3.6T Grand National (grandmas fun car)
Chevy Malibu: 2.0T/hybrid (mainstream) people still enjoy sedans!
Totally agree. Long as the Regal doesn’t have the current design language with the split headlights
Malibu would be more profitable than another Camaro. Don’t mind a Camaro but not as a priority.
They needed something fun and affordable yesterday for grabbing Gen Z men and now Gen X hitting their prime earning years and in their “reminiscing about the old days” era. They are late again, since they are still only “thinking” about making this car now.
We always need some good news like this.
Watch out, the red and blue lights coming up on you when speeding might be a new rear wheel drive Impala or Malibu. 🙂 I would imagine lots of Police Departments would love to get a hold of an updated Impala/Caprice in rear wheel drive form.
Really exciting to hear the Alpha platform will live on. As much as I’d love to see a Camaro or a Cadillac coupe again, my money’s on something like a new Malibu or Impala. The platform needs a volume workhorse. While Cadillac can keep pushing the premium edge—Blackwing-level performance, luxury, and that new F1 connection. People have been calling the CT5-V Blackwing the ‘Hellcat in a tux’ and I think Chevy could follow Dodge’s lead from the last Charger—offer tons of variants on an Alpha-based Chevy sedan. Base models for mainstream buyers, fleets, and police pursuit duty, but with the bones to handle serious performance and even a V8 to carry Chevy performance branding.
I think more probable will be the return of the SS Sedan.
I really want to buy a used one of these in a few years. Can’t justify new and GM doesn’t care about after sale value 2 to 5 years down the road. Try and make us all buy it new by making the quality so low I would actually trust a 20 year old truck/car to go farther, longer, for less repairs than a 4 to 5 year old truck or car.
Yes please!!
Cadillac, Buick and Chevy sedans and 2 doors!!
Police package. Add a 9C1 or a PPV version. Steal market share from the Charger which does NOT have a police version yet.
God I’m surprised GM still has Car Guy who can make this decision
Mr Mark Reuss knows what people want more than Ms Mary…..even with his issues.
*Cries in Pontiac*
“Another intriguing possibility is a four-door Camaro…”
NOOOOOOoooooooooooo!!!!!
Unless it was a four-door like the Mazda RX-8 they had about 10 years ago
They need an adaptable platform like the Charger. Accept 2 and 4 door configurations (even if the 2 door is called Camaro and the 4 door called Impala or something) and numerous drivetrain options, ICE, hybrid, and EV. The more adaptable the better and easier to spread out costs over multiple configurations and multiple brands/models.
Camaro, 2 door, V8 manual. Nothing else.
Look I love the idea of the Camaro coming back but you just know they will bring back something boring like the Malibu instead. Hopefully if they do that they will bring back the SS along with it so Chevy has at least 1 performance car that isn’t $80k+.
But I’ll never get what I really want. A Buick Grand National Wagon, based off the CT5 platform with the V6 Turbo with AWD or 6.2V8 with optional Manual. (Skip the super charger to leave the cadie faster) me and like 5 other people would buy that so fast.
Put some 2nd or 3rd gen Camaro styling cues on the front and rear facia of that coupe concept and we are good to go. Profile looks more 2nd gen than 3rd, but it feels like it’s time for a 3rd gen resurgence.
I have a 2022 Colorado with a bad transmission
Have been trying to get it repaired for the last 2 years
Since they say they are working on things I wish I could get them to work on my vehicle
What ever it is please no small turbo engines
I think gm should use the Alpha 2-2 platform to underpin a Camaro, based on the 1970 design language, an Impala 4 door and a Cadillac CT5, based on the Escala design as well as an ultra-Luxury 4 dr. version with 4 bucket seats to be a modern version of the Cadillac Seville. I also think gm could build a modern version of the Buick Riviera on the platform. It would also be a great platform for an Impala SS and a Riviera Gran Sport.
Well at least we don’t have to worry about competition from former luxury brand Lincoln. Ford’s giving Lincoln’s 4-door sedan to prima donna Mustang. How sad is that. I am thrilled that GM is at least making an effort here considering Chevy, Buick and Cadillac. The platform has so much potential to expand across the other brands. Ford should work a deal to buy however many of this GM platform and put a Lincoln bodies/ interior/ engines being Ford doesn’t want to utilize their own RWD V8 platforms.
Cadillac CT5 convertible!
Better yet — Cadillac CT5 Blackwing convertible.
I’ll buy one.
ICE or EV — choice is good.
If it’s “multiple variants”, I suspect that we might get a CT5 2 door (hardtop and maybe a convertible) and 4 door version. The second car will most likely be a Impala or Malibu for volume reasons.
I hope GM can produce more sedans and coupes, but I’m glad GM is starting to realize that not everyone likes or wants an SUV. The younger generations likes sedans over SUVs, so this will be a good move by GM. Now for Ford and Lincoln to step it up…
Cadillac Eldorado 2/4 doors (El Miraj concept styling with open B pillar greenhouse), Chevy Chevelle or Camaro 2/4 doors (like Dodge is doing with the Charger) with the modern 3rd gen Camaro style lighting for the rear seen in the render recently on this site. Offer the 2.7T standard engine and upcoming PHEV and V8 powertrain variants from Silverado.
Bring the CT6 back while they are at it!
It lives on in China currently and the pictures of it, especially the interior, are REALLY nice.
Would love a Blackwing version of that!
Cadillac: bring back CTS name Sedan, Coupe, Convertible, Wagon – gas, hybrid, V Series
Buick: Avista Personal Luxury Coupe, Regal Sedan, Wagon – AWD & hybrid only
Chevrolet: Malibu Sedan, Malibu Maxx 5- Door Hatch, Camaro Coupe – gas, hybrid
21 potential models considering powertrain variants off of 1 platform. 100% RWD or AWD passenger car program. Will it happen, no, could it be amazing, absolutely. This could easily hit price points from 19k for a base Chevy to 130k for a screaming V-series
This is good news indeed. Normally when an article like this comes out there are naysayers going on about changing consumer tastes, GM will never do it because they won’t make enough money…blah blah blah. I say if the competition can design, build, and sell coupes, sedans, and convertibles in sufficient quantity to be profitable, so can GM – and even better. I’m ready to buy.
Possible return of the Impala is encouraging.
What should have been done is get rid of the slow selling wannabe trailblazer and bring the Malibu back! The Malibu could be the sedan version of the equinox…pull a Toyota truck and base the Malibu sales off of the equinox the combined sales would not only keep the Malibu around but also fresh as nice as the last one was it was outdated. GM does this with trucks so why not a Malibu/Equinox team up. As for Buick they get great reliability reviews and they sell decent but GM just limits them to cuvs and SUVs it’s a shame as the least Buick sedan was great and I liked the last regal to but when I was one they where gone!
It should be a Buick. I vote for a 2-door version as well. Chevy has enough models, Cadillac has a couple cars. GMC is supposed to be the “truck” division, but has 2 CUVs..
Take your time too late for me , I went over to a Challenger and I’m Happy with it! Nice design should never have stopped making The Malibu and the Impala! Shame on You!
How about an El Camino, the Holden platform built one in Australia on the Pontiac G8 architecture. Pontiac was about to launch the sport truck ST8 version of the rear wheel drive chassis. Chevy coupe have several versions including a performance El Camino.
Please bring back the Impala and Cruz hybrid. I would buy a Hybrid immediately.
A new Buick Regal would be great. I have a 2020 Buick Regal with a 2.0 T the last year of a sedan in the Buick lineup. Great and satisfying Buick and would get a brand new in a heart beat if it is made here in the U.S. I really dislike all these CUVs all over.
Impala – 3.6 with a 6 speed auto. 5 yr 50,000 mile war.
