Winter is coming. Ever since Game of Thrones aired, that simple phrase has a new meaning. In this case, it means automakers are clawing for laps at Germany’s Nurburgring before snow sets in. BMW has a home-court advantage, and while we’ve seen plenty of electric Bimmers testing as of late, the mighty 7 Series is finally lapping the Green Hell.
The latest set of spy shots from the CarBuzz photographers caught a camo-wrapped prototype leaning through a corner, emphasis on the lean. The biggest BMW sedan certainly isn’t designed to be a sports car, but we can almost feel the g forces in some of these photos. That tells us two things: this is a heavy car, and the test driver is giving the luxury sedan a thorough workout.
It’s been a minute since we last caught a new 7 Series in public. We go all the way back to July, actually, when a spy video caught a whole fleet of BMW prototypes in the mountains of Spain. We can tell right away that this prototype has progressed closer towards production status – there’s less camouflage up front, notably the absence of mesh screens over the lower fascia. It gives us a better perspective on the changes, and it sure looks like designers are squaring things up just a tad.
Hard panels still obscure the corners of the lower grille opening, but zooming in very close it sure looks like those corners form a simple rectangle versus the angled ends on the current car. That could also mean BMW is doing away with that whole angled motif in front, but hard panels still cover the sides of the lower fascia. We do have a better perspective on the grille though, and while it looks to maintain its basic shape, it doesn’t seem to dip quite as low as before.
Higher up, we still see split lights. But the upper portions should be a bit thinner, with the main headlights growing slightly and adopting a more symmetrical shape.
As the car passes the camera, we see something new at the back. Production taillights are now in place, and while camouflage wrap is still plentiful, we can suss out the general shape and internal structures of those lights. Looking further down, we see something that might throw off our assessment of the front: trapezoid exhaust outlets like those on the current 760. That leads us to believe this is a new 760, possibly with an M Sport package.
